Katarina started skating when she was five years old. Coach Jutta was also in attendance. Witt had her first breakthrough year in 1982 after she placed second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Her graceful and elegant style caught everybody's eye, and from that point ahead she became the dominant figure skater in the competition. Olympic triumph Katarina (now Witt) was awarded the Figure Skating Gold Medal during Sarajevo in the Sarajevo Winter Games. The winner of the competition was a more competitive competition four years later. In fact, she was not a winner in the free skating contest however, she was awarded gold for her performance during the mandatory figure and short programme. Witt was the first repeated medalist in figure skating for women since Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating after her success as a movie actor. She competed in Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. While she was not able to get a medal, she delighted her fans despite coming in seventh. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by its members in 1995.
